Languages and translations

How to have your site in Spanish, Catalan and English, translate it with AI and review every text.

Your site can be in Spanish, Catalan and English. How many languages you have depends on your plan: Free, 1 · Grow, 3. Each language has its own address (for example yoursite/ca) and, as soon as there's more than one, your site has a language switcher in the footer.

The first one, the main language, you choose when you create your site, on every plan: see Create your page.

Adding a language#

  1. Go to Settings › Languages.
  2. Choose the language in “Add language” and press “Save”. On Free you'll see the “Add another with Grow” button instead, with the price, which takes you to upgrading to Grow.
  3. A new screen appears in the top bar, Translations, and in Settings the link “Translate the text →”.

The “Main language” says which language your texts are written in. Changing it doesn't translate anything.

Removing a language deletes its translations. You remove it with the × on its name (“Remove …”) and “Save”. The same happens if you make an added language the main one.

Translating#

In Translations you see every text on your site next to its translation.

  1. If you've added more than one language, choose which at the top.
  2. Press “Translate with AI” and choose:
    • “What's missing and out of date” — only what isn't translated or has changed in the original. This is the usual one.
    • “Everything again, including what you edited by hand” — redoes every translation, including the ones you corrected yourself.
  3. Go over the translations. Each row shows its status: “Not translated”, “Out of date” (the original changed afterwards), “AI” (translated and not reviewed) or “Edited” (you changed it).
  4. Press “Save” and then publish. Nothing reaches your site until you save and publish.

While a text is “Not translated” or “Out of date”, that version of your site shows the original. The fixed texts — opening hours, “Closed”, the form messages, the cookie notice, the widgets' names — we translate ourselves: they don't appear in Translations. Nor do the legal texts: on your English pages they're in English, and on your Catalan pages, in Spanish with a note at the top. See Legal texts and cookies. Nor do blog posts: each one is translated in its own editor, in Blog. See Your blog.

Don't ask the editor's AI chat to translate: it would rewrite your original texts. Translating is always done here.

Editing in the editor with several languages#

In My page you always edit in the main language. The button with the language code (ES, CA, EN) in the bar only changes the language you see the preview in. When you change an original text, its translation becomes “Out of date” in Translations.

If you move to a lower plan#

If you have more languages than your new plan allows, the extra ones are kept but not served: no translation is deleted, and they come back on your site if you move up a plan again. The ones you added first are the ones served; in Settings › Languages, the extra one shows dimmed with “· not shown”.
