Instagram instead of a website: what happens the day you lose the account

A wedding photographer in Invercargill, New Zealand, opened his social apps one day and his Meta account was gone. Meta said he had broken its rule against exploiting people; he says he did nothing of the kind. Meta kept charging him for ads, and he reckons he lost more than 6,000 New Zealand dollars in bookings. RNZ reported it on 30 October 2026. It is not a rare case: the New Zealand government opened an inbox just for this and in a year forwarded 457 cases to Meta, from about 192 people and businesses. If you use Instagram instead of a website for your business, this post is about you: what happens the day the account disappears, and what to do today, in ten minutes and for free, so it doesn't leave you with nothing.
What we measured: one in seven businesses lives only on social media
In our study of 309 hair salons and barbers in Barcelona, 15% have no presence beyond their social media profiles. No website, no page on a booking platform: Instagram and, at most, Facebook. They are part of the 61% with no real website of their own.
We get it: Instagram is free and it is where the work shows. For showing, it beats any website.
The problem isn't using it. It's when it is the only thing. An Instagram profile is an account in someone else's house, with their rules, which can be applied wrongly and with nobody on the other end of the phone. Instagram's terms of use say plainly that Meta can stop providing the service to you or disable your account. The day it happens, your whole shop window goes dark at once.
Three ways to lose the account without doing anything wrong
It gets stolen
A message that looks like it's from Meta («your account will be deleted, verify here»), a password you used somewhere else, a code someone asks you for on WhatsApp. If they change the account's email and phone number, getting it back depends on Meta's process, not on you.
It gets closed by mistake
Moderation is largely automated. In August 2025 Western Australia's small business agency warned about businesses whose accounts were shut without warning and who say they broke no rules. Its adviser's advice was literal: don't put all your eggs in the Meta basket. You can appeal, but there is nobody to call and no deadline.
The person who ran it leaves
The nephew, the employee who «knows social media», the agency from the Kit Digital (the government grant for digitalising small businesses). If the recovery email is theirs and the relationship ends badly, or you simply lose touch, the account is frozen with your name inside.
What Instagram doesn't do for you, even when it's going well
Even with a healthy account, Instagram has gaps a website fills.
- Google doesn't read your profile as your business. When someone searches «locksmith in Sants» or «restaurant open Sunday Ruzafa», Google reads websites and business profiles. In your Google Business Profile the «Website» field expects an address; an Instagram profile there does little. We explain it in how to appear on Google Maps.
- Your hours have no fixed home. They are in a story that expired, in the bio, in a post from August. The customer who wants to know if you open on Monday has to scroll.
- Five links, and hidden. Since April 2023 Instagram lets you add up to five links in your bio, but only the first one shows; the rest sit behind a «more». We covered this in Linktree's free plan and its alternatives.
- The algorithm decides who sees you. Your followers don't see everything you post. A website is seen in full by whoever arrives.
The checklist: protect the account today and have a home of your own
Ten minutes to lock down Instagram
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, not by SMS: Accounts Centre › Password and security.
- Use a recovery email that is yours, the business's, one you can always reach. Never the nephew's or the agency's.
- Check who has access to the account and to the linked Facebook page, and remove anyone who no longer works with you.
- Download your data once a quarter: Accounts Centre › Your information and permissions › Download your information. You get your photos and videos.
- Keep the originals of your best photos off your phone.
- Note where a stolen account is recovered: instagram.com/hacked. Better to know before you need it.
A home of your own: the minimum
A page of your own, at your own address, that tells a customer what they need without having Instagram:
- What you do and where, in one line.
- Opening hours, bank holidays included.
- A WhatsApp or call button, and a booking one if you use a booking app.
- Address with a map.
- Services with prices, or at least «from».
- Your social profiles, linked from there and not the other way round.
Then two changes: the first link in your Instagram bio points to that page, and so does the «Website» field in your Google Business Profile. If you lose the account tomorrow, customers still find your hours and your phone number. Most businesses need nothing more than a well-made landing page.
Doing it yourself: the full sum
Quick and done once. The six steps to lock down Instagram: about ten minutes, plus a quarter of an hour for the first data download. It's yours and it's free; do it today even if you do nothing else here.
Slow, a long weekend. The page of your own. Choosing a tool, figuring out the template, writing the copy, adding the map and the WhatsApp button, adding the legal notice, privacy policy and cookie banner, buying and connecting a domain. Taking it calmly, a weekend. This is where the agency quote or the nephew who'll «set it up for you» appears, and someone else holds the key again.
What never ends. Keeping it alive: Christmas hours and August hours, the price that went up, the new service, the legal texts kept current. Half an hour a month nobody finds. That's why so many websites get abandoned and the business goes back to living only on Instagram.
What we do
At wiweb we take the slow part and the part that never ends.
- We create the page with AI from your business: one page made of widgets, with live opening hours (open or closed right now), services and prices, a map, one-tap WhatsApp, Google reviews and the button for the booking app you already use.
- Your Instagram inside your website, not the other way round: the widget shows your followers and your latest posts, synced on their own. If you lose the account one day, you remove the widget and the page stays standing.
- You change it by typing, like a WhatsApp: «say we're closed in August from the 10th to the 25th». You see the change before it goes live.
- Legal notice, privacy, cookies and the AEPD (Spain's data protection authority) banner come done on every plan, and so do hosting, the certificate and a copy of every change.
You can create yours free, no card: it goes live at yourbusiness.wiweb.me and it's yours for good. With Grow, at €9/month (or €7.50/month paid yearly), excluding VAT, you get your own domain, remove our mark, run your Google Business Profile from the same panel, and every week we review your site and your profile and suggest improvements you approve. The details are on pricing.
What we don't do: we don't recover Instagram accounts or talk to Meta for you. Nobody can promise that. What we can do is make sure that, if it happens, you're not left without a shop window.
FAQ
Can I use Instagram as my business website?
For showing your work, yes, and it works very well. As your only presence, no: the account isn't yours, Google doesn't treat it as a website, and if it's closed you lose your photos, contact details and hours at once. Use it as a shop window and have a page of your own as your address.
What do I do if Meta disables my account?
Appeal from the app or through Instagram's help centre, and keep screenshots of every step. Meanwhile, tell your customers by WhatsApp or email, and make sure your Google Business Profile has your phone number and hours up to date. Don't pay anyone who promises to get it back.
Is a link-in-bio page enough instead of a website?
It organises links, but it still depends on your Instagram bio. If it has your hours, your address and your domain, it's very close to a website; if not, it's a list of buttons.
How much does a page of your own cost?
It can cost nothing. On wiweb, publishing is free on a subdomain, and your own domain comes with Grow at €9/month. Have a look at how it works before deciding.
