Business not showing on Google? Why, and how to fix it this week

Open Google on your phone. Don't search for your business name: search for what someone who doesn't know you yet would type. "Hair salon Gràcia". "Gestoría Sant Antoni". "Bike workshop Poblenou". Do you show up? If you don't, you have a business not showing on Google where it counts.
If the answer is no, you're not alone. And if you think it's because your website is ugly or old, you're almost certainly wrong. There are four real reasons, they're concrete, and three of them can be fixed this very week without paying anyone a thing.
There are two Googles, and you're only failing one
When someone types the exact name of your business, you show up. Nearly everyone does. That gives a huge false sense of security: you search for yourself, you find yourself, and you conclude you're fine.
But that person already knew you. The customer you're missing is the other one: the one who types a service and a barrio (neighbourhood) and has no idea you exist. That's where you're up against twenty businesses for three lines of screen, and that's where most of them disappear.
Do the test in an incognito window, so Google doesn't do you the favour of remembering you. It's uncomfortable, but it's the only honest result.
Google explains how it decides. Literally.
There's no secret formula. In its own Google Business Profile documentation, Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance — how well your listing matches what the person searched for.
- Distance — how far you are from the person searching.
- Prominence — how well known you are, online and offline.
You don't control distance: you're not going to move your premises. The other two you do. Everything that follows is about working on those two.
Reason no. 1: you have no listing, or you haven't claimed it
This is the most common one and the cheapest to fix.
Google creates listings on its own, from scattered data, without asking you. You can have been open for six years and have a listing you've never touched, with the opening hours from when you started and a photo a customer took in 2021.
Search for yourself and look at the panel on the right. If it says "Own this business?" (¿Eres el propietario de esta empresa?), the listing exists and it isn't yours. That means two things: you can't correct anything, and any user can suggest changes to your hours or your address. Claiming it takes fifteen minutes and a verification postcard or phone call.
If there's no listing at all, create one today. Without a listing you're not on the map, and without the map you don't exist for "near me".
Reason no. 2: the listing is half-finished
Google asks, in its own words, for "complete and detailed information". That isn't marketing advice: it's the instruction manual for relevance.
What's almost always missing:
- The right primary category. It carries the most weight and it's the one most people get wrong. "Hair salon" and "barber shop" aren't competing for the same thing.
- Services listed one by one, using the name the customer uses, not the technical one.
- Real opening hours, including bank holidays and August.
- Recent photos of your actual premises. Ten, taken on your phone, beat two from a stock library.
- Phone and WhatsApp, and someone who actually checks the WhatsApp.
- A link to your website.
One afternoon. Honestly, one afternoon.
Reason no. 3: you don't have a website of your own
We need to be clear here, because this is the point almost nobody believes until they see the numbers.
We counted 309 hair salons in Barcelona, one by one. 61% have no website of their own. Not a bad website: none. An Instagram profile, a Booksy or Treatwell page, a directory listing.
And that's the problem: Instagram isn't yours, Booksy isn't yours, the directory isn't yours. You don't decide what it says, or whether it changes its design tomorrow, or whether your competitors appear underneath you. For prominence, Google needs something to read about you that is yours, living at an address you control. It doesn't need to be a big website: it needs to exist, load fast and say the same thing as your listing.
The figure that surprised us most was the other one: the 39% that do have a website have a reasonably good one. The sector's problem isn't that websites are bad. It's that they don't exist. We tell the whole story in 61% of Barcelona hair salons have no website of their own.
Reason no. 4: nobody has talked about you for months
Prominence feeds on fresh signals, and the most accessible ones are reviews. According to BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 97% of consumers read reviews of local businesses.
Twenty reviews from 2023 aren't the same as twenty reviews from this quarter. If your latest one is from last year, to Google you're a business nobody talks about any more.
This week's plan
No agency, and not a euro spent on the first three steps:
- Monday (20 min). Claim your listing. If it's already yours, go in and check the phone number and hours are today's.
- Tuesday (40 min). Fill it in completely: category, services, hours, ten photos taken on your phone, WhatsApp.
- Wednesday (30 min). Ask for five reviews. From your five happiest customers this week, by WhatsApp, on the same day they walk out of the door. No dusty QR codes on the counter.
- From here on. Your own website. And here we'll tell you the truth: this is no longer an afternoon's job.
What isn't going to happen
You won't be in first place by Friday. Prominence moves over weeks and months, not days, and it also depends on who's next to you on the same street.
And nobody — us included — can guarantee you a position on Google. Anyone who guarantees it is lying to you, and we've written about the digital marketing lies sold as guarantees.
What does happen is the boring part: you do the first three steps once and they make a difference. The fourth — having a website of your own that loads fast, with copy that people and search engines can quote, with the legal side in order, and kept up to date when your hours or prices change — isn't done once. It's maintained. That's why so many people give up on it after three months, and that's exactly what we do.
FAQ
I have Instagram with 4,000 followers. Doesn't that count as a website?
For showing off your work, yes, very much so. For someone searching "service + barrio" on Google to find you, no: Instagram isn't built for that and it isn't yours. You could lose the account tomorrow and, with it, everything you've built.
How long before I notice a difference?
A claimed, complete listing can make a difference within days or a few weeks. Prominence — reviews, your own website, mentions — takes months. Be wary of anyone who gives you an exact date.
What if my competitors pay for ads?
Ads take the top spots, but the map and the results below are still there and they can't be bought. A business with a complete listing and recent reviews competes perfectly well against one that pays and has an empty listing.
Is a website worth it if I'm already on Booksy or Treatwell?
Those platforms bring you bookings, and that's fine. But they rent you visibility and put you right next to your competitors. Your own website is the only thing in all of this that will still be yours in five years.
Doing it yourself: the full sum
Let's add up everything above honestly, because nobody does.
Quick, and done once — an hour and a half. Claiming the listing (20 min), filling it in completely (40 min), setting up the review routine (30 min). Do this whatever you end up paying for. It's yours, it's free and nobody will do it better than you.
Slow: the long weekend — your own website, if you know what you're doing. Choosing a template, writing the copy, buying the domain, setting up hosting and the certificate, compressing the photos, putting together the legal notice and a cookie banner the AEPD (Spain's data protection authority) would accept. If you don't know how, this is where the agency quote shows up, or the nephew who leaves it half-done in March.
The part that never ends — every month, for ever. August opening hours. Prices when they go up. Photos when you change premises. The banner when you add a tool. Speed when the theme updates. And searching for yourself again in incognito to check you still show up. Half an hour a month at best — and it's exactly the half-hour nobody can find. That's why half of Barcelona has websites with 2021 prices.
What we do
The second part and the third.
Your page is built from what already exists about your business on Google — name, address, hours, photos, reviews; you confirm the details, tick your services and pick the style. It's published in two minutes, not over a weekend. The legal texts come written and are kept up to date. Photos are compressed and served from the nearest server. And your Google listing lives inside the page, live: rating, reviews and opening hours. Your website and your listing can't contradict each other, which solves half of reason no. 2 with no maintenance.
Changing something means typing it, like a WhatsApp: "say I close at three on Friday". No dashboard to learn, and no email to someone, waiting for an answer on Tuesday.
Publishing it is free, with no card: create it now. With Grow (€9/month) you get your own domain, and every month we tell you where you rank on the map, whether AI mentions you and what's going wrong. With Pro (€24/month) it's every week, and the technical things that go wrong get fixed on their own. You can see what each plan includes, or how a page is built under the bonnet.
And if you don't even have the afternoon: someone from our team builds it and sends it to you ready to approve, included when you sign up for Grow or Pro.
What you won't find on any plan, here or anywhere else, is a promised date for reaching first place.
